This ongoing series refers to the coined term, ‘site-specific’, a term used when artwork responds and has a direct correlation to a specific location, putting emphasis on our relationship to the land’s particular context. SIGHT-specific, shifts the focus from the land to challenging our dominant reliance and relationship to vision in visual spaces. Artworks in the series explore the possibilities of embossed and sculpted materials in collaboration with two-dimensional surfaces, such as painting and print – mediums that are often prohibited to touch. The collection of artworks are like diary entries of daily observations that have been intentionally abstracted and blurred while drawing from various textures, spaces, and the artist’s own thoughts found in and cultivated from the environment, drawing back to the original term, ‘site-specific’. Some pieces are paired with audio recordings of the represented location, which are activated when touched. This interactive collection invites a sense of contemplation, memory keeping, and being present in the moment.
As an extension of this series, I completed a two-week residency at NG Art Creative Residency in Maussane-le-Alpilles, France capturing locations in the surrounding areas with the monotype printing technique as well as sound recordings of the areas I have printed. The prints will be layered with a tactile element in order to feel what has been captured on a two-dimensional surface. The recordings will also play once touched.
