I went to Rouge Park with my Landmarks class the other day for a field study as part of our research for the course and I found that there were many built homes for animals, like man-made ponds, birdhouses, bee hotels, etc., as well as naturally built homes in the landscape. It made me think of settlement and establishment in relation to the development of Canada when settlers would come over from Europe. These homes were built to encourage population growth and community within each species. However, invasive species like the Emerald Ash Borer, would take over ash trees for example. These ideas are still brewing in my head as I’m still in the process of making connections and relating them to creating an artwork.
